What is White Stag?

White Stag is a youth leader development program that has been successfully training young people since 1958.  It is operated by Boy Scout Venturing Crew 122 which also provides the adult and youth staff.   This week long training program is held each summer.

  • Coed - open to all boys and girls ages 11-17
  • Experienced and trained staff, both youth and adult
  • No limit on the number of candidates from a Troop
  • Program includes backpacking in the High Sierras
  • Have fun while learning in an outdoor setting

Venture Crew 122 is chartered in two Northern California Boy Scout Councils:  San Francisco Bay Area Council and Mt. Diablo/Silverado Council.

Program Phases

The White Stag program is divided into three Phases, with each one operating as a separate Scout Troop.  Candidates are assigned to a Phase according to their age and experience.

Phase I — Patrol member development

  • Ages 11-12
  • Learn basic camping and patrol member skills
  • Experience how to be a member of a small group
  • One night backpacking trip

Phase II — Patrol Leader Development

  • Ages 12-14
  • Learn Patrol Leader skills
  • Candidates rotate as Patrol Leaders
  • Two night backpacking trip

Phase III — Troop Leader Development

  • Ages 14-17
  • Learn leadership of two or more groups
  • Candidates rotate as Patrol Leaders
  • Youth staff chooses a candidate each day to be Senior Patrol Leader
  • Three night backpacking trip

Six Year Training Cycle

Youth staff positions in each Phase are also leadership training experiences.  Thus, White Stag can be a six year youth leadership training program with different learning experiences each year.  This is accomplished by serving in each Phase as a candidate and then as a member of the youth staff.  The staff of each Phase, both youth and adult, meets several times during the year to plan and prepare their program.
