White Stag Crew 122: Register for Summer Camp!

Count down to White Stag 2008: 2008-08-03 13:00:00 GMT-08:00!

Who can participate:

White Stag is a “co-ed” leadership development program for boys and girls ages 11–18. Youth can participate as both candidates and youth staff. Adults 18 years and older can serve as adult staff. In fact, most of our adult staff are “White Staggers” who have been participating for several years and have now “graduated” to adult staff.

White Stag is successful only because of the hard work and devotion of many volunteer adult leaders. All of us involved are unpaid volunteers! We are always looking for adult volunteers to help us make this program a success. You need not have camping or scouting experience; we can use your help in the kitchen (kitchen staff are called “cookies”), helping the quartermaster (equipment and supplies), or other duties. If you can join us this summer for a day or two or for the entire week, please consider joining the White Stag team!

Young children (under age 11) of adult volunteers can accompany their parent/guardian, and will be one of our “turtles.” (Only adult crew staff and volunteers who stay at “base camp” can bring their turtles. Phase staff that go on the overnight hikes cannot leave their children at base camp.)

Here’s a “Glossary” of who’s who in White Stag:

  • Candidates:  Candidates are the campers participating in the week-long summer camp program. They are girls and boys ages 11–18.
  • Youth Staff:  Youth staff are people under 18 years of age who work with the adult staff as leaders for the week-long summer camp program. Serving as youth staff is a valuable component of the “6-year training cycle” in which many youth participate. All youth staff are “Phase Staff,” part of either Phase I, II or III.
  • Adult Staff: Phase Staff:  Each phase has an adult scoutmaster and several additional adult staff. These are people age 18 or older who have the requisite camping, scouting and leadership skills to assist in the leadership development training that is the core of White Stag.
  • Adult Staff: Crew Staff:  Crew Staff are those adults that stay at base camp and help make the entire week-long program a success. They include the Director, Assistant Director, Quartermaster, Head Cookie, Nurse, Registrar, Treasurer, the team of cookies that assist the head cookie, and other adult volunteers that help in any number of ways.
  • Turtles:  Children under age 11, whose parent/guardian is a Crew Staff or other base camp volunteer, can stay at White Stag base camp and be a part of our Turtles Program. There will be an adult supervising them at all times, and activities, meals and hosuing will be provided. (Housing is likely to be with their own parent/guardian, of course.)

How to register:

  1. Print out and complete the three (3) required forms:
    • Registration Form (Required for all participants; fill out either the candidate or staff registration form)
    • Class 3 Medical Form (Required by all participants, including adult volunteers.)
    • Authorization & Consent Form (Required by all participants under age 18.)
      • Participation and Registration:  White Stag camp will be held at Camp Mensiger in 2008, which is operated by the Greater Yosemite Council (GYC) of the BSA. In order to participate in White Stag at Camp Menisnger, your child will be registered with the GYC. The White Stag Association charters three units within the GYC: Venture Crerw 122 for boys and girls ages 14–18; Troop 122 for boys ages 11–14; and Learning for Life for girls ages 11–14. This GYC registration is in addition to —not a transfer from— your child’s home troop or venture crew registration, and there is no additional cost to you for this registration.
      • Transportation:  During the one-week summer camp program, each phase takes part in an overnight hiking-camping trip away from their base camp: one night (Phase I), two nights (Phase II) or three nights (Phase III). This may require transportation by automobile from base camp to a trailhead, and so we ask for consent from a parent/guardian for us to provide that transportation. The cost of transportation is included in the camp fee.
      • Photography:  White Stag staff and candidates take many pictures during the summer camp program (and during the fall Indaba gathering). We ask for parent/guardian consent to use these images in both print and electronic publications. We will not include any identifying information about any minors in these images.
      • Medical Treatment:  As with any program such as White Stag, it is important that we have parent/guardian consent for seeking medical diagnosis and/or treatment, in case of emergency.
